What is an abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck”?

A “tummy tuck” or abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that can reduce stretch marks, remove excess skin and fat and flatten your abdominal paunch or potbelly. Dr. Sharon Giese performs tummy tuck at her NYC office, so you can enjoy the privacy and safety of receiving this procedure at her onsite, AAAASF Accredited, surgical suite.

Little known benefits of having a tummy tuck:

  1. Tightened Abs: Your waist is cinched during a tummy tuck by creating an “internal corset.” This tightens the abdominal muscles which may have loosened with pregnancy and age. The “internal corset” also decreases your appetite, so many patients achieve additional weight loss after surgery.*
  2. Contoured Thighs: A tummy tuck achieves a type of thigh lift by pulling the skin of the anterior and lateral thighs upward during surgery.*
  3. Delicate Belly Button: A smaller, more youthful-looking belly button can be achieved by an “umbilicoplasty”, a surgical technique performed during tummy tuck which enhances the appearance of the belly button.*
  4. Enhanced Sexual Pleasure: The “supra-pubic lift” technique which occurs during an abdominoplasty relocates the clitoris to a higher, more exposed position. It also creates a more youthful appearance to the mons pubis.*

How does an abdominoplasty accomplish so much in one surgery?

A tummy tuck surgically removes sagging skin resulting from age and pregnancy while also removing diet-resistant fat. This is accomplished by a low-abdominal incision, hidden in the panty line. The skin is lifted off the abdominal muscles, which will then be tightened in an internal corset to cinch the waist. Excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is re-draped and tightened, effectively pulling up on the thighs and mons pubis. The belly button is then brought out through the newly tightened skin, achieving a more youthful appearance.*

After tummy tuck surgery, you may experience a decrease in several clothing sizes. Most patients find it much easier to find clothes that fit following an abdominoplasty. You can look forward to a new wardrobe and an improved self-image.*

* Patients individual results may vary.

To achieve the ultimate results from your body contouring surgery, you may want to consider a combination surgery. Popular combinations with an abdominoplasty include breast augmentation, breast reduction or a breast lift. Liposuction to the back and hips in combination with a tummy tuck is also popular as it creates overall body slimming. Depending on your individual concern, you may want to inquire about other tummy procedures as well. Dr. Giese can access your individual condition during a personal consultation to determine the procedure best for you. If you have predominantly excess skin and looseness of the lower abdomen only, a mini tummy tuck at our NYC on-site, AAAASF Accredited, surgical suite might be a better option.

A mini tummy tuck can be performed when there is less skin excess.  The upper and lower abdomen is treated with internal ultrasound for skin tightening. The excess fat is removed by liposuction, and the lower excess skin is removed, resulting in a flatter belly. Occasionally, the stretched lower abdominal muscles are tightened. This stretched muscle, referred to as “spread,” usually occurs from being pregnant or is genetic. During the mini tummy tuck, the scar is slightly shorter than a full tummy tuck, and there is no scar around the belly button.  In general, the mini tummy tuck carries less risks than a full tummy tuck.* Dr. Giese will advise you if you are a candidate for this less complicated procedure during a private consultation.

Another body contouring option is liposuction. If you only display diet-resistant or excess genetic fat without excess skin, liposuction alone may be a beneficial option option.
